Buttermilk Biscuits 3 cups flour
2 tbsp sugar
4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
½ teaspoon cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
½ cup shortening
1 cup buttermilk
3 tbsp melted butter
Preheat oven to 425°F. Mix together flour, baking powder, salt, cream of tartar, and baking soda in large bowl until blended. Cut in shortening, mixture should look like coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk and stir with a fork until a soft dough forms. Place on a lightly floured work surface. Knead dough until smooth. Roll out or flatten dough to ½ inch thickness. Using a biscuit or 2 inch floured cookie cutter, cut into circles. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Brush with butter. Bake 15 minutes or until golden brown. Brush with remaining butter after baking. Approx 20 biscuits.
